the river
Deptford has a rich naval history. Its relationship with the river Thames is longstanding. While the river does not hold the central position it did in times past, its allure endures. While many of us Londoners frequently cross the river - either above or below - we perhaps do not take time to go down to its shores to watch its waters flow. The horizon opens up at the river, making it possible to step out from London’s tight embrace. However, the Thames is a river that suffers greatly from its positioning, with sewage, pollution and plastic waste all affecting its waters and the creatures that seek to make the river their home. Increasingly, initiatives are springing up to combat the tide of plastic polluting our city’s main waterway. Getting involved in these projects is something really valuable us Londoners can do to support our city.
