Flooding is one of the most commonly experienced effects of climate change in the UK, costing the economy an average of £1.1 billion annually. Record-breaking rain fall particularly overwhelms areas where trees necessary to slow water have been replaced by farmland. Rewilding Britain has demonstrated that rewilding projects help reduce flooding risk, adding even more evidence to the case for restoring ecosystems. In London, our Victorian sewer systems can be overwhelmed when it rains, particularly as increasingly rain falls on hard surfaces where it cannot be absorbed. The London Wildlife Trust has produced a guidance document outlining small-scale projects to support water absorption and efficiency, such as green roofs, rain gardens and depaving.
