In the UK, 97% of our flower-rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s, having a devastating effect on bee populations (amongst other flora and fauna). Friends of the Earth estimate the cost to farmers of pollinating crops without bees to be £1.8 billion. Yet, it is farming that is the single biggest cause of falling bee populations, with 13 native bee species already extinct in the UK and 35 more under threat. Extensive use of pesticides is compounding the devastation of bee populations resulting from habitat loss, along with climate change, invasive species and disease.

While we are not surrounded by vast farms and fields in London, cities remain important sites for bee species. There are many simple things you can do to help our busy, buzzing bees, with some good ideas detailed here
